Materials for Learning Finnish
In this article, I will discuss various ways to prepare for the YKI test on your own or with the help of courses.
Applications for Learning Finnish
Dictionaries:
sanaKirja - The best dictionary from Finnish to major languages. It's free, shows many synonyms, and you can find a word by its root.
https://www.deepl.com/ - You can translate whole sentences, but it works mediocrely. Finns say it translates too formally and in literary language. So use it only to translate from Finnish to your language and understand the meaning.
https://finessi.com/ - Finnish-Russian dictionary.
Applications
https://kielikoulu.yle.fi/#/ - One of the best applications for learning Finnish. You can choose your level and watch daily news in simplified Finnish with subtitles. You can also find a list of words required for the level here. I wrote about this in the article [[Sufficient Language Level]]. It's also available for mobile devices.
https://yle.fi/aihe/artikkeli/2015/12/15/ykitreenit-tavoitteena-yleinen-kielitutkinto-suomen-kielessa - Practice tests on various topics.
Quizlet. In this application, you can find flashcards for training. Check out the author elipitka, she was my teacher in the courses and made flashcards for us.
http://visnakker.no/ - A site with word cards and voiceovers. You can learn simple word groups: food, clothing, transport, and others.
https://areena.yle.fi/1-2226175 - One-minute video plots in Finnish about everyday situations: buying clothes, going to the store, and others. They help to understand Finnish by ear and expand vocabulary.
